Here's your (not so) totally useless fact(s) of the day: Thanks John!

"Up the River" or "Up the creek without a paddle" is derived from Penology.

The New York city jail is on Riker's Island. When convicted, prisoners would be
shipped to the famous "Sing-Sing" prison, otherwise known as the NY State
Prison art Ossining, NY - up river 30 miles from Riker's Island.

Wikipedia says: "The use of the expression "up the river" to mean "in prison"
derives from the practice of sentencing people convicted in New York City to
serve their prison terms in Sing Sing, which is literally "up the Hudson River"
from the city. Its use dates from 1891."

There are plans to convert the original 1825 cell block into a prison museum.
There are approximately 1700 maximum security prisoners housed there - in
newer cell blocks.
