The Earth is closest to the Sun around January 1 and farthest from the Sun in
July. The seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis, not by the Earth's
distance from the Sun. The tilt of ther Earth's axis gives the Northern Hemisphere
the most direct sunlight (longer daylight hours) between March and September,
while the Southern Hemisphere receives the most direct sunlight in the other half
of the year. The more direct sunlight, the hotter the temperature. That's why when
it's summer above the equator, it's winter below the equator.
