In 1937, Wheaties, which sponsored local baseball radio broadcasts on 95
stations around the country, held a nationwide contest to find its "most popular
announcer." The winner was a play-by-play guy from WHO in Des Moines, Iowa,
named Ronald Reagan. His prize was an all-expensive-paid trip to California to
visit the Chicago Cubs training camp; while there, he was spotted and asked to
screen test for Warner Brothers.
